Plasma and LCD technology offer different features that provide varying benefits to a wide range of vertical markets. Our comparison of these technologies provides a quick way of identifying the appropriate technology for your business.

Ultra large format is defined as 70" and greater and the opportunity in big just got bigger with the addition of a new LCD technology offering.

Plasma

Advantages
  • High image resolution with up to 4K capabilities
  • High contrast ratio providing vibrant rich colours and deep blacks
  • High refresh rate and faster response time - ideal for fast moving images and video and also produces less 'noise' on camera
  • 3D enabled
  • Great viewing angles
  • Durable glass front provided a toughened protection to screen
  • Degradation of luminosity is now less due to technology advantages
  • Can be mounted in portrait and landscape (excluding the 152")
  • Touch options available
Disadvantages
  • Susceptible to image retention and screen burn-in however recent models have the pixel orbitor (Nano drift) to combat this
  • Heavier in weight
  • Due to the methods used to generate colour and intensity, flickering or shimmering effect may be noticeable
  • The highest power consumption of all LFD range
  • Requires a controlled lighting environment to perform at maximum potential
  • Requirement for cooling consideration due to high heat emissions
Vertical market and Application Suitability
  • Residential - Home Cinema
  • Corporate - Boardroom

LCD Backlit

Advantages
  • Compact and lightweight design
  • Slim bezel
  • Energy efficient with lower power consumption than Plasma
  • Little or no flickering effect
  • No affect from screen burn-in
  • 24 x 7 displays
  • Lesser requirement for cooling consideration with lower heat emissions
  • High expectations for average life span
  • can be mounted in portrait and landscape
Disadvantages
  • Suffers from image degradation at high viewing angles
  • Slower refresh rate produces 'noise' on camera
  • Minor susceptibility to image persistance (less severe than screen burn-in)
  • Compact design means typically better suited to wall mounting than floor standing

LCD Edgelit

Advantages

  • Energy efficient with the lowest power consumption of LFD range
  • Slim line sleek and lightweight design
  • Lowest heat emissions of LFD range meaning fewer cooling considerations
  • Not effected by screen burn-in
  • High expectations for average life span
Disadvantages
  • Not 24 x 7 capable
  • Slim line design means typically more suited to wall mounting than floor standing
  • Wider bezel required to contain light source
  • Lower brightness of 420 cd
  • Slower refresh rates making it more susceptible to image smearing
  • Uneven brightness uniformity producing a minor white spill one edge
  • Minor susceptibility to image persistence (less severe than screen burn-in)
  • Not capable of 4k or 2k resolution
